Supporting increased livelihood access for women and youth through Community Development Centers in Djibouti

A ceremony at the CDC in Arhiba today commemorated the project, in the presence of all project partners and community members. The event showcased the cultural vibrance of the community, and included a traditional dance by the local youth.

The event was attended by H.E. Ambassador Umio Otsuka, Ambassador of Japan to Djibouti; H.E. Dr. Hibo Moumin Assoweh, Minister of Youth and Culture; Dr. Rossella Monti, UNOPS representative in Djibouti; Mr. Elmi Issa Gabobeh, Advisor to the Director General of CAC International Bank; Mr. Ali Mohamed Ibrahim, Director of the CDC in Arhiba; and members of the community.

The three CDCs, located at PK12, Quartier 6 and Arhiba, were significantly affected by flash floods and cyclone Sagar, which occurred in May 2018. Launched in March 2019, the USD 500,000 project conducted a complete renovation of the sites in order to make the CDCs fully accessible for the young community. Vocational training will also be provided to support job creation for women and youth.

The project is expected to benefit 12,000 people through increased livelihood access and support to social stabilization. The CDCs will foster improved economic and social futures for the target communities and contribute to an improved local labor market.
