Up to 26 April 2021, the Ministry of Health in Djibouti confirmed 10,885 cases of COVID-19 in Djibouti, with 138 fatalities reported since the beginning of the pandemic. The progress of the epidemiological situation in Djibouti during the month of March and April 2021 is highly alarming. There was a remarkable increase in the number of cases during the epidemiological weeks 10 to 14 (from 7 March to 10 April 2021) with more than 3,587 new cases reported during this period including 30 fatalities reported. The number of cases started to slightly decrease during the past two epi weeks 15 and 16 (11 to 24 April 2021) with 1,024 cases reported and still high mortality rate with 39 deaths officially reported. The positivity rate increased from a range of 0% to 4%, during the past few months, to be up to 28% during the past two months. The case fatality rate increased to reach at 1.2% with 69 reported deaths from COVID-19 in the country during the months of March and April 2021.
The Djiboutian government stays vigilant to what is happening globally regarding the epidemiological situation of COVID-19, some decisions regarding the travel ban from and to India, Brazil and South Africa has been taken the last week of April 2021. This comes after that the Presidency revitalized the barrier measures necessary to decrease the community transmission through a presidential decree signed and communicated on 18 March 2021, requesting the wearing of face mask and physical distancing as mandatory requirements in public and governmental places. This decree comes after a period of release due to the low number of cases reported previously in Djibouti, and the ZERO reporting that was repeated several times from September 2020 to February 2021, with the last time reported on 24 February 2021, as a unique case for all countries in the Eastern Mediterranean Region of WHO and East Africa Region.
