Fardoussa had never set foot in a school before 2022.
That was the year she joined the youth education center at Sounah Al Haya, an organization dedicated to supporting vulnerable children. She recalls the day her life took a new direction.
"I had never been to school, but one day, people from Sounah Al Haya came to talk to my mother while I was sitting beside her in Hodane district. She was selling lohohe (traditional bread), and I was helping with household chores. They explained the value of education to my mother, and she finally decided to enroll me in school."
Before this, Fardoussa spent her days assisting her mother. Since joining the center in 2022, she feels transformed:
"Now I feel useful and fulfilled. At school, I'm learning to read, write, and do math, but I also learn how to cook and sew. I love all the subjects."
However, Fardoussa has faced some challenges. She wonders about the reason she had to repeat a grade: "I don’t like repeating. They say I have dyslexia… but what is that? Is there something wrong with my eyes? Why did I have to repeat?"
Sounah Al Haya doesn’t just provide basic education; it helps young people dream and aspire. Fardoussa has clear ambitions:
"I want to keep studying, just like my former classmates who moved on. My dream is to have a good job and earn my own living. I even want to go to France and become a chef."
